The Universe as a Hologram  August 21, 2005
Following article contains in my opinion one of the best almost-scientific introduction to holographical conception of the world. May be Seiichi Kirima could write such a thing. I’ve added my brief comment to this at the foot of the page.
There are lots of references and allusions to the holographic theories (especially holographic brain theory) in Boogiepop Phantom. Nagi Kirima’s father Seiichi most likely was murdered because of his research in that area. The whole situation in Boogiepop Phantom is nothing but residual holographic effect of the pillar of light in which Echoes and Manticore have turned. So i think it’s very helpful and overall educational to read something about holography.

THE UNIVERSE AS A HOLOGRAM
Author unknown (apparently attributed to Michael Talbot)
Does objective reality exist, or is the universe a phantasm?
In 1982 a remarkable event took place. At the University of Paris a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th century. You did not hear about it on the evening news. In fact, unless you are in the habit of reading scientific journals you probably have never even heard Aspect’s name, though there are some who believe his discovery may change the face of science. Aspect and his team discovered that under certain circumstances subatomic particles such as electrons are able to instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them. It doesn’t matter whether they are 10 feet or 10 billion miles apart. Somehow each particle always seems to know what the other is doing. The problem with this feat is that it violates Einstein’s long-held tenet that no communication can travel faster than the speed of light. Since travelling faster than the speed of light is tantamount to breaking the time barrier, this daunting prospect has caused some physicists to try to come up with elaborate ways to explain away Aspect’s findings. But it has inspired others to offer even more radical explanations. [...]

RAGING ATTACKS OF GLOBAL POLITICAL PRURIENCE
Orange Princess Yulia Tymoshenko,
Prime Minister of the Ukraine
Remember my earlier post this week about the Brazilian political scandal, when a not-particularly-distinguished secretary suddenly becomes a sex-bomb? Certain readers of the blog have intimated that I seem to have a prurient interest here. Like, you know, maybe I just dote on posting pics of hot chicks in borrowed underwear.
*No, no, ladies and gentlemen. This is a definite trend. It’s worldwide. If you think that Brazilian provocation was something, check out this Russian-Ukrainian version. [...]
Theremin  August 14, 2005
Recently on Boing Boing i read following article:
“New York Times on the Theremin
As a preview of a performance by Lev Theremin’s great niece Lydia Kavina this Saturday night in Katonah, New York, the NYT recounts the history of the amazing electronic instrument. As part of the Caramoor International Music Festival, Kavina will be the soloist in Joseph Schillinger’s First Airphonic Suite for Theremin and orchestra, completed 76 years ago. (Seen here, Caramoor co-founder and Theremin virtuoso Lucie Rosen.)” NYT article here.
It struck me that what they talking about is that theremin from Boogiepop Phantom! I always thought that was some kind of Japanese instrument. Accordingly i regarded all that episode with theremin as a “romantic” digression without any physical grounds. How wrong i was!
The theremin or thereminvox (originally pronounced /tay-ray-meen/ but often anglicized as /there-uh-min/ [1]) is one of the earliest fully electronic musical instruments. Invented in 1919 by Russian Lev Sergeivitch Termen (also Termin, later gallicized to Léon Theremin), the theremin is unique in that it requires no physical contact in order to produce music and was, in fact, the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The instrument consists of a box with two projecting radio antennas around which the user moves his or her hands to play…
…The theremin was originally the product of Russian government-sponsored research into proximity sensors…
…Although it has never been a widely-played instrument, the theremin was the basis from which all twentieth-century electronic musical instruments were later developed…Look at this entry at Wikipedia for further information…
So Boogiepop actually does pretty believable thing when puts the theremin down the tunnel to give the “sleeping” children posibility to communicate with the world. If we can imagine physical phenomenon that allows children to abide in some passive electromagnetic state, why can’t we imagine that the only way for them to communicate with the conventional world is some kind of the electric interaction. So theremin as the “proximity sensor” is pretty suitable here.
Stanton  August 11, 2005
The following article was originally published on Animeondvd.com. At the very end of the essay, after the sources are listed, I have added a response that I had written on the aodvd’s message board shortly after this was first printed.
This article has been reprinted with the permission of its author, Robert Stanton.
Boogiepop Phantom is an animated series based upon the acclaimed written work of Kouhei Kadono. Set somewhere in common, urban, contemporary Japan, the dark science fiction premises of the show quickly take over and distort any traditional elements of culture or knowledge. In fact, one of the series’ mantras is “In this world, anything can happen, and everything does happen all the time,” indicating the bizarre twists and turns of fate that will happen to the characters and the world they reside in during a certain amount of time. Over the course of twelve episodes, the viewer witnesses not only the biographical development of a wide cast of characters, but also the way that each of their individual lives manages to effect or coincide with others’. This is successfully accomplished by the use of straightforward character narratives and flashback sequences that force the viewer to make sense out of the series’ use of time in order to piece together what actually happened. The show stresses that flashbacks are concepts of memory and not necessarily truth, and that time is a relative concept dependent in which order sequences are experienced or viewed. [...]
